Why should you try using a sugar scrub? Sugar Scrubs exfoliate your skin, remove dirt, dead skin, and extra oils from your skin. It will leave your skin feeling invigorated, clean and refreshed without the harshness of other exfoliation methods. A lot of people prefer a sugar scrub over a salt scrub due to the fact that sugar scrubs are far less harsh than a salt scrub is. The oils and fragrance in a sugar scrub are meant to moisturize and relax, creating a spa-like experience. To use a sugar scrub in your own shower or bath tub: Turn on the water and let yourself get completely wet, then after you have been in for a minute or two turn off the water. Then take the sugar scrub and rub onto your skin, including your face, arms, body, and legs. Once you have rubbed the scrub into the entirety of your body and the sugar has completely dissolved, go ahead and turn the water back on and rinse. You won't need to apply lotion after your done as the sugar scrub is extremely moisturizing too. One other benefit is that it increases blood flow beneath your skin speeding up the healing of blemishes, and acne on your skin from the inside out. So we hope you enjoy a sugar scrub soon whether you buy it from us or make your own, sugar scrubs have much to offer you in your overall skin health!
So here it is. winter time, the perfect time to take baths! So maybe you've heard of people using bath salts, or seen them for sale somewhere, but why use bath salts in your baths? Well, there are several different types of salts people put in their baths but one in particular stands out, and it's this particular one that Dirty Kids Soap sells as well, Dead Sea Salts. Here is why we use Dead Sea Salts:
Dead Sea Salt contains a unique balance of salts that include; magnesium, potassium, calcium chloride and bromides. The following article by Amy K. McNulty PHD explains what each off these ingredients do and why they are so good for you.
"Magnesium is important for both combating stress and fluid retention, slowing skin aging and calming the nervous system. Calcium is effective at preventing water retention, increasing circulation and strengthening bones and nails. Potassium energizes the body, helps to balance skin moisture and is a crucial mineral to replenish following intense exercise. Bromides act to ease muscle stiffness and relax muscles. Sodium is important for the lymphatic fluid balance (this in turn is important for immune system function). So we can see that bathing in high quality sea salt could replenish the minerals which are critical to our skin metabolism.
Studies have been conducted on the health benefits of bathing in Dead Sea salts. One such study was conducted by Dr. I. Machtey on 103 patients suffering from osteoarthritis and tendinitis. Patients were either treated with baths of 7.5%, 2% or 0.5% Dead Sea salt concentration. Improvement was found after as little as one week of treatment for those treated with 7.5% or 2% salt baths. By the study's end, 80% of the patients reported less pain; 70% experienced improved mobility and 60% were able to decrease their use of analgesics.
Dr. J. Arndt studied the effect of Dead Sea salt baths on psoriasis. Fifty patients were treated for 3-4 weeks, taking 3-4 baths each week. In as little as one week, many patients treated with a 10% salt concentration in their baths experienced marked improvement. This improvement included relief from itching, sleep disturbances, and skin scaling. Treatment with Dead Sea salts is not associated with any side effects."

In an age of the conscientous consumer I have found it an interesting conversation to have with people concerning the origins, ownership, and accetable practices involved in the "Natural" and "Locally" labeled products we find in stores. So, after I ran into a couple of articles my eyes were opened a bit to who actually owned and ran companies that give the appearance of being "local", and "natural" companies. Probably, the most applicable to our business is Burt's Bees. We have seen it in a lot of chain stores and have had multiple conversations about how a natural company gets to the point of being in Target or Walmart. I had never gone so far as to doing any research on it till recently and found out some interesting things.
L'Oréal bought Body Shop for $1.3 billion in 2006.
Immediately after the deal, consumer satisfaction with Body Shop fell almost 50%, according to an index that tracks public perception of more than 1,000 consumer brands.
Animal rights activists and multinational Swiss company Nestlé, which has a 26% share in L'Oréal, also called for a boycott of Body Shop.
Colgate-Palmolive bought Tom's of Maine for $100 million in 2006.
Colgate-Palmolive acquired an 84% stake in the company for roughly $100 million. After the acquisition, Tom's of Maine loyalists grappled with whether to keep supporting the brand. Some complained about the new toothpaste's sweet flavor, the new plastic packaging, and the new smell of deodorant soap.
With that being said, there are still many small, local and uncompromisingly natural businesses out there. Many are right around you. Just in our area of Jewell IA, we have found people selling chickens, eggs, vegetables, pork, repurposed furniture, and of course bath and bodycare products, who we know personally. Sometimes it takes just a little more effort up front but it keeps the money in our communities and provides a safe and trustworthy product for our families. Dirty Kids Soap is small, natural, and local business!!
Dear Journal. It’s been a couple months since my last confession, sorry. So last night I was getting ready for bed, I looked over and saw these things sitting on the shelf that said “Bath Bomb”. I thought “Hmmm… that sounds intriguing. It has the word “bomb” in it and it gave me pictures of what happens when you put Alka Seltzer in a 2 liter bottle of Coke. BOOOM! That sounded AWESOME! The fleeting thought of me taking a bath sometime in my male-adult future actually looked… "cool". Then I thought of me having to explain to the guys at work why I smelled like roses and I quickly pushed that out of my mind, but I was still curious. So I decided I would fill the sink with water and watch the “bomb” “go off”. I took and placed a rose colored “Bath Bomb” in the water. Ok, it wasn’t exactly how I pictured it… no explosion. But, there was rose petals and fizzing. The fizzing was super violent, though! Well, maybe not so much violent but more like Alka Seltzer in water kind of fizzing. So the end result was there was a rose scented bath, with rose petals, and it left my hands silky smooth. There, I confessed. Don’t let the guys at work know, I will be the laughingstock. :)

Defender Oil Bottle .375ml (10ml)
This Bottle contains 400 drops of the Defender Essential Oil Blend. It has many uses
Defender Oil for Diffusing
Diffusing Defender Oil will purify the air and eliminate odors.
Different diffusers have different directions so follow yours.
Defender Oil Recipe for Diffusing
Diffuse 15-20 drops of Defender Oil for 15 minutes three or four times a day in an essential oil diffuser. This can help purify the air of germs while adding a nice fragrance. As your family breathes in the oils it will help to support a healthy respiratory system. Washing your hands frequently with soap and water and diffusing essential oils is valuable during cold and flu season
If we come in contact with, or have been exposed to any infectious germs we run the diffuser continuously for a few hours. Diffusing helps give our immune system the support it needs to stay strong and fight against viruses and bacteria. At the very first sign or symptom that our immune system needs support we diffuse until symptoms subside.
I like to add a few drops of Lemon Essential Oil along with the Defender Oil in the diffuser for healthy respiratory support.
We also run the diffuser in the bedroom of anyone who needs healthy immune support, while they sleep at night. This gets a continuous flow of the oils into the respiratory tract. It is highly supportive.
Defender Oil Recipe for an All-purpose Spray:
This is an all-purpose spray solution for cleaning and disinfecting around the home. This Defender Oil is great for purifying the air and eliminating odors
1 drop of Defender essential oil for each ounce of water, or for a stronger solution (my preference) 1 drop for every 1/2 ounce of water.
Add the Defender oil first, then add water. It mixes better that way. Shake vigorously before each use.

What does she do down there?? I find myself asking myself that question often. “Bang, Bang, Clash!” Now if she was building a Frankenstein down there wouldn’t there be a foul order of some kind? After all the banging and crashing only fruity, flowery scents come wafting up from the basement. Crazy! What irony it is that from such violent sounds comes such wonderful fragrance. It would be like walking out to your rose bushes having a rock concert, or the morning doves shooting AK-47’s at each other. They just don’t go together, and how my beautiful wife can make such noise is such a mystery. Sometimes she asks me to help her... I think, “ Did she see the fear in my eyes, or maybe she just smelled it on me.” I probably gave it away by the quick footsteps and exit out the front door. I will not be brought in to her devious schemes as an accomplice! I am far to intelligent for that. I am sure at the sight of all the bubbling pots, machinery, and mechanisms she is using down there you too would wonder at how she makes such wonderful soaps, perfumes, make-ups, etc.
Confessions of a Soaper’s Husband
My first confession: I hate Bath and Body Works. I always have, and not because I dislike their products, no, I have nothing against their products. I don’t like it, because for a man the nauseating mixture of scents is the signal to walk, neigh, run the other direction. It’s the same emotion I feel when I encounter the candle section of the Hallmark store, or the perfume section of Younkers. I’m a man, I don’t belong any of these places. Here’s where the irony enters. Unbeknownst to me on the day of my wedding, I married a woman who would become a full blown soaper and at this point nearly all 875sqft of my basement is filled with soap and soap paraphernalia. I have a mixture of scents that waft from the basement, and when the heater kicks in, it gets blown into every corner of the house through the vents! At first I panicked, and followed my instinct; I ran. But then I realized that there was no escape and here I am. I am what you would call a skeptic when It comes to most of the products that are produced in my house and since we have started this business we have recruited many men who are what I am: A closet Dirty Kids Soap lover. These men stand outside of our booth cracking jokes while their wives shop and when the wife asks what they would want then just snicker and snort. A few weeks later, the wife shows up again, and this time on a mission. What the husband doesn’t know is that the wife gladly rats the husband out, that she is back to get more of the soap her husband can’t live without. Now, you might think I were embellishing a bit and maybe I am but, this scenario has played itself out more times than I can count! On top of that, if my house were not full of a never ending supply of the stuff, I would be “that guy”. I might even don a disguise just to get seconds on a few of the products I secretly love…

Minnesota Just Became the First State to Ban Anti-Bacterial Soap454,995g
If you've ever washed your hands with anti-bacterial soap, there's a good chance you were rubbing yourself down with a chemical called triclosan—a chemical that's been proven to be harmful in humans in recent years. Now, Minnesota has become the first state to officially ban it. And yours could be next.
The Minnesota ban, which doesn't actually go into effect until January 1, 2017, applies to pretty much any retail consumer hygiene products that includes triclosan as an active ingredient—including about 75 percent of anti-bacterial soaps.
The FDA claims there's no evidence that triclosan soap is any more effective at washing away germs than non-antibacterial soap and water. What's more, according to recent studies, triclosan can "disrupt hormones critical for reproduction and development, at least in lab animals, and contribute to the development of resistant bacteria." So not only is this chemical not doing you any real good, it could actually be harming you, too.
Minnesota may be the first to pass an overarching ban, but there's a good chance other states will follow suit; triclosan is even getting some heavier regulations nation-wide. Just this past December, the FDA ruled that anti-bacterial soap manufactures would have to prove that their soaps are not only safe, but also more effective than plain soap or water. Which sounds like something they probably should have been doing all along. [AP]

Abstract. The disturbing prevalence and increasing incidence of nosocomial infections and community-acquired infections, compounded with bacterial resistance to antimicrobial agents, dictates the need for effective and varied means with which to cleanse hands and work surfaces. Lye Soap, Dial Antibacterial, Cinthol and Dettol bar soaps were evaluated in vitro for their effectiveness as antimicrobial agents against eleven selected genera of bacteria that have been implicated in nosocomial infections and are part of the resident or transient flora of the skin. Trichlorocarban, the active ingredient in Dial Antibacterial, Cinthol and Dettol soaps, and Lye soap were assessed for their antibacterial activity. The null hypothesis was that there would not be a significant difference in antimicrobial efficacy when compared with the non-antibacterial soap Irish Spring used as a control based on zone of inhibition analysis. The alternative hypothesis, which was accepted for all of the soaps except Lye soap, stated that the rejection of the null hypothesis is indicative of significant bacterial inhibition (p<0.001). Statistical analysis of the data by the Kruskal Wallis test demonstrated that there was a significant difference between the inhibitory capacity of all of the soaps tested, excluding Lye soap, when compared with the Irish Spring control (p<0.001 for each) for three of the four tested concentrations validating the rejection of null hypothesis. It was also determined that there was no significant inhibition of Gram negative bacteria by any of the tested soaps (p<0.001).
